GETTING STARTED

Probably the most popular class of model racing yacht, certainly by number of boats owned, the IOM is an ideal starter boat for those new to the hobby.

Find yourself a local club. Get down there and meet the members, talk to them and you'll probably find that they offer you an opportunity to sail their boat to see how you might get on.

Most newcomers to the sport buy a second hand boat. These can be obtained for sums as little as £200 or so. Whilst that won't get you the most modern state of the art competitive craft, it will normally be perfectly adequate to get started with. If you want to pay more or want to start off with a new boat either in ready to sail format or partly built for completion by the owner then you probably start to look at sums from £500 maybe up to about £2,000.
